I can not imagine there an ISO standard for Black Russians and I think I might be slightly beyond following the recipe...in fact I don't think I'm in a fit state to boil a jug...

English was not standardized then, it could have had a far funnier spelling.
It was also a British colony at the time, so their spelling would have been used, had it been formalized .
